AG(riculture) In A Bag Library Project

The Fluvanna County Library has several Ag in a bag kits that you can check out to help your kids have fun learning. Each kit has a book to read along with some fun activities.  We put together these kits using recent Ag in the Classroom books, and they include hands-on activities that coordinate with the book. Check one out and have some fun with a child in your life. Spread the word!  Below is a list of what we currently have available with additional bags and projects coming soon.

Soil Your Undies Challenge

The soil under our feet is much more than just dirt. In fact, it is an ecosystem full of life. One teaspoon of healthy soil contains more microbes than there are people on the planet.  These microbes break down organic matter like cotton, while also helping soil retain nutrients and moisture. Healthy soil is vital to farmers as well as all plants, animals, and humans.  Join us! Choose a location. Dig a hole and plant the undies at least 4 inches deep.  Place a marker so you can find the site again!

 

Make some observations and write them down on a 3x5 card:

  • What color is the soil?

  • Can you see any organisms in the soil?

  • How does the soil feel (sticky, grainy, hard, soft)?

  • Wait 60 days. Carefully dig up your undies. How have they changed?

TREX Recycling Program

Did you know that the average 500-square foot composite Trex deck contains 140,000 recycled plastic bags? Trex offered the opportunity for us to collect plastic bags for recycling. Each time we collected 1000 pounds, we received a free Trex park bench for placement in our community. 

 

This program has come to completion, we were able to collect a grand total of 11,000+ lbs of plastic and keep it out of our landfill.
